Cookie Policy

We only use cookies that genuinely help us run the platform and improve your experience. Here is exactly what we use and why.

Our cookies at a glance

Strictly Necessary Always active

These cookies are essential for the website to function correctly. They are set in response to actions you take, such as logging in or setting preferences. You cannot opt out of these.

Analytics Optional

We use PostHog to understand how people use Social Maze — which features are popular, where users drop off, and how well our pages convert. All data is used solely to improve the product.

We have written this policy to describe what we actually do — not what we might do one day. If we add new tracking tools in the future, this policy will be updated before they are deployed.

1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work correctly, remember your preferences, and provide site owners with information about how their site is used.

We may also use browser localStorage to store small amounts of data on your device. Unlike cookies, localStorage data is not sent to our servers on every request, but it serves a similar purpose (e.g. remembering UI preferences within the app).

2. What Cookies We Actually Use

We keep our cookie use minimal and intentional. At the time of writing, Social Maze uses cookies in two categories:

Strictly necessary: A single first-party cookie that stores your cookie consent choice.

Analytics (optional): PostHog, an open-source product analytics tool, sets two cookies to help us understand how visitors use the platform. PostHog data is used only to improve our product — we do not share it with advertising networks or use it to build profiles for third-party targeting.

We do not currently use cookies for:

Advertising or retargeting (no Facebook Pixel, Google Ads, or similar)

Live chat (no Intercom, Drift, or similar)

Marketing automation (no HubSpot, Marketo, or similar)

A/B testing beyond what PostHog provides

Any third-party social media tracking widgets

3. About PostHog

PostHog is the analytics tool we use to understand product usage. When analytics cookies are enabled, PostHog collects:

Pages visited and time spent on each page

Which features and buttons you interact with

Your approximate geographic region (country/city level, derived from IP address — the full IP is never stored)

Browser and device type

PostHog does not collect:

Your name, email, or any other personally identifiable information unless you are signed in and we have explicitly associated your account

The content of anything you type or post

Precise location data

PostHog operates under a strict data processing agreement with Social Maze. You can review their privacy practices at posthog.com/privacy.

If analytics cookies are declined, PostHog is not initialised and no data is sent.

4. Your Choices

Cookie banner. When you first visit Social Maze, you will see a small banner asking for your consent to optional (analytics) cookies. You can accept or decline.

Changing your mind. You can update your preference at any time by clicking "Cookie settings" in the footer of any page.

Browser controls. You can also block or delete cookies through your browser settings:

Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data

Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data

Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data

Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions

Blocking strictly necessary cookies will not affect your browsing of our marketing site, but may cause issues once a full account system is introduced.

PostHog opt-out. If you prefer not to be tracked by PostHog even when visiting pages without accepting cookies, you can install the PostHog opt-out browser extension, or set posthog.opt_out_capturing() in the browser console.

5. Do Not Track

Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. There is currently no universal standard for how websites should respond to this signal. Our analytics setup (PostHog) respects consent given via our cookie banner; we do not currently make separate adjustments based on the DNT header, but we will revisit this as standards evolve.

6. Changes to This Policy

If we introduce new tracking tools or cookies in the future, we will update this policy before deploying them and notify you via the cookie consent banner on your next visit. We will not add advertising or third-party tracking cookies without giving you a clear choice to opt out.
